Chapter 5 - The State Troopers
Heavily armed state troopers poured out of the vehicles with their weapons drawn.
"Drop your hands and step away from the suspect!" a booming voice ordered over a megaphone.
Detective Hayes froze in pure panic, instantly realizing he was vastly outranked.
Dr. Elias Morgan stepped out of the lead SUV, pointing directly at Lorraine and the corrupt detective.
"Those are the people who orchestrated the kidnapping," Dr. Morgan yelled to the troopers.
The state police swiftly disarmed Detective Hayes and placed him under immediate arrest.
Two female troopers gently moved Caleb away from the van and unlocked his handcuffs.
"Dr. Morgan called us from the surgical wing when he realized the local precinct was compromised," a trooper explained.
Caleb practically collapsed onto the doctor's shoulder in a wave of overwhelming gratitude.
"You saved my son," Caleb wept, wrapping his arms securely around the portable incubator.
"I just did my job, Caleb," Dr. Morgan replied humbly.
Lorraine screamed vicious obscenities as the troopers forced her into the back of a police cruiser.
Her perfect, calculated facade had finally shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
Caleb ignored her pathetic screaming and walked back toward the hospital elevators with his child.
He needed to return to the surgical wing to see his wife immediately.
When he reached the intensive care floor, a frantic nurse ran directly toward him.

"Mr. Rowan, you need to come with me right now," the nurse said breathlessly.
"Your wife just woke up, and she is completely hysterical."
