Chapter 8 - The Desperate Stand

Robert racked the shotgun loudly, the metallic clack echoing like thunder across the perfectly manicured lawn. He ordered the children to step away from their father and go back inside the house immediately. The kids whimpered and clung to Thomas's legs, refusing to abandon the only parent who truly loved them. Helen stepped out onto the patio holding two large suitcases, dressed in traveling clothes despite the late hour. She coldly informed Thomas that the private jet was waiting at the airfield to take them away forever. She bragged that she had forged his signature on the adoption papers using the crooked notary they hired. Thomas shielded his children with his own body and told his parents they would have to shoot him first. He knew pulling the trigger would destroy their pristine public image, which was the only thing they cared about. Robert hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger trembling slightly against the metal trigger guard. Thomas used that microscopic window of doubt to kick a heavy clay planter directly at his father's knees. The heavy pot shattered against Robert's shins, causing him to stumble and drop the barrel of the weapon. Thomas grabbed the shotgun by the hot barrel and wrestled it aggressively out of the older man's grip. He threw the firearm into the deep end of the swimming pool, rendering it completely useless. Helen shrieked in horror and lunged at Thomas with her manicured claws, trying to scratch his eyes out. Thomas easily dodged her attack and shoved her backward onto the cushioned patio furniture. He scooped up six-year-old Jacob and grabbed Rebecca by the hand, dragging them toward the side gate. He kicked the wooden gate open and sprinted down the quiet suburban street with his terrified children. He knew they needed a place to hide where his parents' vast web of influence could not reach them. He remembered an old, abandoned cabin in the mountains that his grandfather had left him in a secret will. They ran for miles until they reached a late-night truck stop on the edge of the interstate highway. Thomas used the last of his stolen coins to use the payphone and call a completely untraceable taxi service. They huddled in the shadows behind a dumpster, shivering in the cold night air as they waited for salvation. The headlights of a vehicle swept across the parking lot, illuminating their desperate hiding spot. But it wasn't a taxi; it was three black SUVs with government license plates swarming the area.
