Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

Thomas stood frozen on the concrete patio as the warm July breeze carried the scent of barbecue. He watched his ten-year-old daughter wipe away tears with the back of her hand while wearing a massive apron. His youngest son struggled to scrub soda stains off a table while teenage cousins recorded him on their phones. The sheer disrespect from his family ignited a fire in his chest that he could no longer suppress. He marched across the lawn and knocked over a folding chair in his path. He grabbed the heavy tray of dirty dishes from Samuel and let it crash onto the ground. The loud shatter of porcelain silenced the entire garden party instantly. Elderly relatives gasped and clutched their pearls as they stared at the angry father. Thomas knelt down and gently untied the oversized apron from his daughter's fragile waist. He ordered his three terrified children to go wait inside his vehicle immediately. Helen stood up from her decorated table and let her polite facade drop into a hateful scowl. She pointed a manicured finger at him and accused him of ruining her seventieth birthday celebration. She claimed he was intentionally embarrassing the family in front of their esteemed church friends. Thomas raised his voice and loudly reminded everyone that he had personally paid for every single detail of this party. He listed the mortgage on his parents' house and the utility bills he had covered for the past five years. Robert finally stood up and wiped his mouth with a crisp linen napkin. He loudly declared that money could never buy respect or proper morals for a broken man. Robert claimed Thomas was a severely unfit father who had failed to build a traditional home for his children. Thomas laughed bitterly at the absolute audacity of the people who relied on his bank account to survive. He turned his back on them and prepared to walk away from his toxic family forever. He mentally calculated how fast he could cancel all their credit cards before the party ended. But as he reached the wrought iron gate, two uniformed police officers stepped directly into his path. Robert smiled coldly from across the lawn and announced he had already filed for full emergency custody. One of the officers placed a heavy hand on Thomas's shoulder and told him he was under arrest for child endangerment.
