Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The tactical officers swiftly moved in and placed heavy iron handcuffs on Robert, Helen, and the corrupt agent. Helen screamed obscenities and threatened to sue the entire police department as they shoved her into a cruiser. Robert remained completely silent, his face pale and defeated as his empire of lies finally collapsed around him. The tactical commander personally helped Thomas to his feet and sincerely apologized for the horrific misunderstanding. He assured Thomas that the video evidence was more than enough to put his abusive parents away for decades. Within a week, federal investigators unravelled the massive web of financial fraud Robert had built over the years. The corrupt judge was arrested, and the fraudulent adoption papers were immediately destroyed in a shredder. The banks quickly reversed the illegal wire transfers, fully restoring every single penny to Thomas's business accounts. His insurance company completely covered the damages to his flagship diner, allowing him to rebuild it even better. Thomas officially bought a beautiful new home in a quiet neighborhood with a massive backyard for his kids. He watched from the kitchen window as Rebecca, Samuel, and Jacob laughed and played tag in the green grass. They were finally safe, happy, and free from the toxic shadows that had haunted their childhood for so long. The nightmare was officially over, and Thomas had proven that a father's love could conquer any evil scheme. He smiled warmly and poured himself a cup of hot coffee, savoring the peaceful silence of his new life. Suddenly, the heavy brass knocker on his solid oak front door slammed three times in rapid succession. He opened the door to find a battered, unmarked cardboard box resting alone on his welcome mat. Inside the box was a single, faded photograph of a woman he didn't recognize, holding three newborn babies. Flipped over, the back of the photograph contained a handwritten note in blood-red ink that made his heart stop. The message simply read, "They weren't your real parents, but I am, and I am finally coming home to collect."
