Chapter 3 - The Empty Vault

Robert stood under the flickering streetlamp with a smug smile plastered across his wrinkled face. He tossed a shiny set of keys onto the concrete sidewalk at Thomas's feet. He calmly explained that he only paid the bail so Thomas could witness his entire empire crumble in person. Thomas ignored the keys and lunged forward, grabbing his father by the collar of his expensive jacket. He demanded to know where his children were and what Robert had done to Marcus. Robert just laughed and signaled to a massive bodyguard stepping out of the sedan's shadows. The bodyguard shoved Thomas backward, sending him crashing onto the hard pavement. Robert adjusted his collar and advised his son to check his bank accounts before trying to play the hero. The luxury car sped away into the night, leaving Thomas completely alone on the empty street. Thomas picked himself up and sprinted three blocks to the nearest automated teller machine. He slid his debit card into the slot with trembling fingers and typed his security pin. The glowing screen loaded for a terrifying moment before displaying his current balance. His personal checking account showed exactly zero dollars and zero cents. Panic set in as he checked his business accounts, his savings, and the college funds he set up for his kids. Every single account had been completely drained down to the last penny. He pulled out his phone and frantically dialed his bank's emergency fraud hotline. The late-night representative informed him that a joint account holder had legally withdrawn all the funds that afternoon. Thomas realized he had foolishly kept his mother's name on his oldest business account from when he first started the company. Helen had used that ancient loophole to funnel his entire life savings into an untraceable offshore trust. He was officially penniless, homeless, and stripped of his rights as a father. He walked aimlessly until he reached the glass front doors of his flagship diner in the city center. He pulled his master key from his pocket to seek shelter inside his only remaining safe haven. The key refused to turn in the lock, no matter how hard he forced it. A bright orange notice was glued to the glass, declaring the property seized by the county tax authority. As he stared at the eviction notice, a black van slowly pulled up to the curb behind him.
