Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

The cold metal handcuffs cut into Thomas's wrists as the officers pushed him into the back of their cruiser. He slammed his head against the window and screamed for his children as they cried in the driveway. Helen wrapped her arms around the weeping kids and put on a spectacular performance of a concerned grandmother. She told the officers that Thomas had been acting violently for weeks and that the children were in grave danger. Thomas begged the police to check his background and see that he was a respected business owner with no criminal record. The older officer ignored him and slid into the driver's seat with a look of pure disgust. They drove him to the downtown precinct and locked him in a holding cell for hours without explanation. He paced the small concrete room while picturing his vulnerable children trapped in that toxic house. A tired public defender finally approached the iron bars holding a thick manila folder. The lawyer explained that Robert had submitted a mountain of fabricated evidence claiming Thomas was a heavy drug user. Thomas denied everything and demanded a drug test right that second to prove his complete innocence. The lawyer sighed heavily and revealed that someone close to Thomas had already testified against him. Thomas demanded to know who would ever tell such malicious lies about his character. The defender flipped to the second page and read the name of the primary witness. It was Marcus, the general manager of Thomas's own catering company and his supposed best friend. Marcus had signed a sworn affidavit claiming Thomas used the business to launder money and hide illegal substances. Thomas felt the blood drain from his face as he realized the depth of this betrayal. He realized his parents had not acted alone in this elaborate scheme to destroy him. The lawyer warned him that the judge had already granted temporary custody of the children to Robert and Helen. Thomas grabbed the iron bars and vowed to destroy everyone who had a hand in taking his family. Suddenly, a guard walked down the hallway and unlocked the cell door with a loud click. The guard smirked and told Thomas he made bail, but the person who paid it was waiting outside. Thomas walked through the precinct doors and saw Robert leaning against a black luxury sedan.
