Chapter 5 - The Ashes of Betrayal

Thomas coughed violently as the acidic tear gas burned his lungs and blinded his eyes. He blindly kicked the passenger door open and tumbled out onto the cold gravel of the warehouse lot. He wiped his watering eyes and squinted into the thick smoke, searching desperately for Sarah. The sound of screeching tires echoed through the alley as a dark SUV sped away with her inside. He stood up on shaking legs and realized the burner phone was still tightly gripped in his right hand. He shoved the crucial evidence into his pocket and limped away from the scene before the police could arrive. He knew Robert had hired professionals to clean up any loose ends that could expose the conspiracy. Thomas walked for miles until he reached a cheap roadside motel on the outskirts of the city. He used the last few crumpled cash bills in his wallet to rent a room under a fake name. He locked the flimsy wooden door and shoved a heavy dresser against it for extra security. He sat on the edge of the stained mattress and pulled the burner phone out to copy the audio file. The screen flashed brightly for a second before completely dying, the battery completely exhausted. He frantically searched the motel room for a charging cable but found absolutely nothing useful. He realized he was holding the key to his children's freedom, but he couldn't even turn it on. He lay back on the bed and stared at the cracked ceiling, praying his children were safe tonight. The next morning, he disguised himself with a stolen baseball cap and sunglasses from a gas station. He walked to a local electronics store and purchased a cheap charger with coins he found in a parking lot. He plugged the phone into an outlet outside a coffee shop and waited for the screen to light up. The phone powered on, but a terrifying message flashed across the digital display. A remote wipe command had been initiated during the night, permanently erasing all stored data. The recording of his parents confessing to their massive fraud was gone forever. He slammed his fist against the brick wall, knowing he was back to square one. As he stared at the blank screen, the phone suddenly began to ring with an unknown number. A distorted, robotic voice on the other end told him to turn on the local news immediately. Thomas ran to the coffee shop window and watched the television screen above the counter in pure horror.
