Chapter 8 - The Desperate Ploy

The heavily armed police officers stood securely behind their cruisers with their weapons drawn and ready.
Arthur cursed loudly from the front seat, realizing his flawless plan had just hit a massive, unexpected obstacle.
Christopher knew that Arthur owned half the corrupt politicians in the city, making the police highly unreliable.
"He will bribe his way through this checkpoint, we have to escape right now," Christopher warned Emily.
He grabbed the heavy steel ice bucket and struck the weakened, spider-webbed glass with absolutely every ounce of his strength.
The thick bulletproof window finally shattered completely, raining heavy glass shards onto the leather seats.
Christopher violently kicked the remaining glass out of the frame and squeezed his body through the narrow opening.
He aggressively pulled Emily and Leo out of the luxurious vehicle just as Arthur began shouting angrily at the police officers.
They sprinted blindly into the chaotic, crowded streets of the bustling downtown financial district.
They blended effortlessly into the massive crowds of busy commuters and tourists walking along the busy sidewalks.
"The corporate tower is only three blocks away, but the lobby will be heavily guarded by his men," Christopher panted.
Emily looked up at the towering, glass-covered skyscraper that served as the heart of his billion-dollar empire.
"We do not need to go through the front lobby if we use the underground maintenance access," she suggested brilliantly.
She explained that her mother used to work for the commercial cleaning company that serviced the massive building.
They sneaked down a dark, highly unlit service alley and found the heavy steel door leading to the trash compactors.
Emily expertly bypassed the old, outdated digital lock by crossing two exposed wires in the control panel.
They quietly entered the dark, echoing basement of the towering skyscraper, completely undetected by the security teams.
They managed to safely reach the heavy freight elevator that traveled directly to the executive penthouse floor.

As the elevator doors slowly slid open on the top floor, they were greeted by an incredibly horrifying sight.
Vivian was standing entirely alone in the hallway, holding a gun directly to the head of Christopher's elderly mother.
