Chapter 2 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Christopher froze as the cold steel of the gun barrel was pressed against his forehead.

Marcus, his most trusted Head of Security, offered a cruel and mocking smile.

Vivian's frightened demeanor vanished instantly as she walked gracefully into Marcus's free arm.

"You really thought a few million dollars a year would buy his ultimate loyalty?" Vivian sneered.

Christopher realized that his entire life had been a carefully orchestrated lie.

"You two have been planning this hostile takeover since the day we met," Christopher concluded quietly.

Marcus cocked the heavy handgun and demanded that Christopher unlock his secure digital briefcase.

"The merger documents require a retinal scan and a biometric fingerprint to authorize the offshore transfers," Marcus explained.

Emily stood completely still by the dining table, her heart pounding loudly in her chest.

She knew that the second Christopher unlocked that briefcase, both of their lives would be ended.

Christopher slowly reached for the expensive leather briefcase resting on a nearby chair.

He looked desperately at Emily, silently praying that the brave maid had one more trick up her sleeve.

Emily noticed a heavy silver coffee pot still sitting on the hot breakfast warmer.

With lightning speed, she grabbed the boiling silver pot and hurled it directly at Marcus's face.

Marcus screamed in agonizing pain as the scalding liquid blinded him temporarily.

His gun fired wildly into the ceiling, raining expensive plaster down upon the dining room table.

Christopher did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.

He grabbed Emily's hand and sprinted aggressively toward the heavy oak doors of the grand library.

They slammed the heavy doors shut and engaged the massive steel deadbolt just as bullets ripped through the wood.

"We have to get to the underground panic room before they breach this door," Christopher yelled over the gunfire.

He rushed toward the massive bookshelf and pulled a specific hidden volume to reveal a secret passageway.

As the bookshelf slowly swung open, a blinding red light began flashing furiously from inside the dark tunnel.

A computerized voice echoed loudly from the walls, announcing that the self-destruct protocol had been initiated.
