Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire

Matteo's brother ripped the car door open and dragged Norah out into the freezing rain.
He pressed his gun against her temple, preparing to execute her right there on the asphalt.
The border guards stood by completely motionless, proving that Matteo's bribery reached all the way to the federal level.
Suddenly, the radio clipped to the brother's belt crackled with a frantic, static-filled voice.
"The FBI is raiding the Boston headquarters right now," the voice screamed over the radio.
Norah smiled, knowing the encrypted files she had mailed to the authorities had finally detonated.
The voice on the radio continued, reporting massive casualties and a complete collapse of the syndicate.
"Matteo is dead," the voice confirmed. "Federal agents shot him on the airstrip."
The younger brother froze in absolute shock, his gun wavering away from Norah's head.
Norah did not hesitate.
She kicked the distracted man violently in the knee, sending him crashing to the wet pavement.
She jumped back into her running vehicle and slammed the gear shift into drive.
She floored the gas pedal, steering the heavy car off the road and completely bypassing the steel barricades.
She crashed through a wooden fence and bounced wildly over the snowy ditch into Canadian territory.
No one followed her, as the guards were completely paralyzed by the news of the empire's sudden destruction.

Norah drove for three hours until she reached the snowy outskirts of Montreal.
She was finally free, wealthy, and completely out of danger.
