Chapter 3 - The Ghost Car

Norah desperately twisted the ignition key, but the engine was completely dead.
The heavy metal crossing gates dropped down on both sides of the black sedan.
The ground began to vibrate violently beneath the tires.
A massive freight train was hurtling down the tracks directly toward her side of the car.
Norah kicked the driver side door, but the electronic locks had malfunctioned and jammed shut.
She crawled over the center console and threw her body against the passenger door.
The handle clicked, and she tumbled out onto the wet gravel just in time.
The blaring horn of the train drowned out her screams as the locomotive obliterated the sedan.
Metal completely shattered, sending burning debris raining down into the muddy ditch.
Norah lay in the freezing mud, covering her head and protecting her stomach.
The police would find the wreckage and assume the mafia boss's wife died in a tragic accident.
She wiped the blood from her cheek and limped into the dark woods.
She walked for two hours until she found a deserted gas station glowing in the fog.
She used her hidden cash to purchase a cheap burner phone and a bottle of water.
She sat on the curb in the rain and powered on the device.
She had not given the new phone number to a single soul.

The screen lit up with a new text message.
"I know you were not in that car, Norah," the message read.
