Chapter 8 - The Border Crossing

Norah gritted her teeth and gripped the steering wheel as another brutal contraction hit her.

She forced herself to focus on the bright lights of the Canadian border checkpoint approaching in the distance.

She pulled up to the guard booth and rolled down the window.

She handed her forged passport to the stern border patrol agent standing in the cold.

The agent swiped the passport through his computer system and stared at the screen.

The silence stretched on for an agonizing minute.

Norah felt another wave of blinding pain tear through her stomach, but she forced a polite smile.

The agent looked down at her, his expression completely unreadable.

He picked up a red radio microphone from his desk and spoke quietly into it.

"We have a code red at lane four," the agent said, stepping back from the vehicle.

Heavy steel barricades immediately crashed down out of the pavement, completely blocking the road ahead.

Sirens began to wail loudly from the main security building.

Norah slammed the car into reverse, but two armored border patrol trucks pulled up close behind her, trapping her.

Armed guards poured out of the buildings, raising their rifles and pointing them at her windshield.

A man in a dark suit walked out of the main office and approached her car.

He tapped on the glass with the barrel of a gun.

It was Matteo's younger brother, smiling like a predator who had finally cornered his prey.
