Chapter 5 - The Narrow Escape

Norah rushed to the wooden door and twisted the handle.
It was completely jammed from the outside.
She heard the motel manager speaking frantically on his cell phone in the hallway.
He was demanding his five million dollar reward from the Russian syndicate.
Norah grabbed her bag and ran into the tiny, filthy bathroom.
She wrapped a thick towel around her fist and punched through the frosted glass window.
The glass shattered loudly into the dark alleyway.
She carefully climbed through the jagged frame, scraping her knee on the concrete ledge.
She sprinted down the alley just as three black SUVs screeched into the motel parking lot.
Heavily armed men poured out of the vehicles and kicked down the door to her empty room.
Norah hid behind a row of dumpsters, holding her breath to keep from coughing in the rain.
She waited until the men rushed around the back of the building to search the woods.
She quietly slipped away and flagged down an eighteen-wheeler truck idling at a red light.
The driver was an older man with kind eyes who agreed to take her north toward the border.
Norah climbed into the warm passenger seat and immediately passed out from pure exhaustion.
She woke up hours later to complete darkness and complete silence.

The truck was parked inside a massive, abandoned warehouse.
The kind driver was sitting perfectly still in the driver seat, holding a plastic zip-tie and smiling at her.
