Chapter 9 - A Desperate Sacrifice

Silas violently pulled the metal pin and threw the grenade directly toward the van where my mother was sitting.
Gabriel did not hesitate for a single, precious second.
He sprinted forward and aggressively tackled my mother to the hard ground.
He shielded her fragile body entirely with his own back just as the explosive detonated.
The massive shockwave violently threw me backward against the cold steel of the shipping container.
A thick cloud of smoke and fire completely swallowed the area around the black van.
I screamed Gabriel's name into the darkness, my voice cracking with absolute terror.
The smoke slowly cleared to reveal a horrific, devastating scene.
The van was completely destroyed, and debris was scattered everywhere across the dock.
I rushed forward and found Gabriel lying motionless over my mother.
I frantically rolled him over and saw that his tactical vest was completely shredded by sharp shrapnel.
He groaned in deep pain, but he was miraculously still alive.
My mother was completely unhurt, entirely protected by Gabriel's selfless, heroic sacrifice.
I wept openly as I helped Gabriel sit up on the cold, wet pavement.
Don Carmine slowly walked over to Silas, who was bleeding heavily from his shattered knee.
The old mentor looked down at the traitor with absolute disgust and zero mercy.
He raised his revolver and fired one final, decisive shot into Silas's treacherous heart.
The long, bloody war that had plagued the Varrick family for years was finally over.
Gabriel’s loyal men quickly secured the perimeter and called in their private medical team.
I rushed back to the shipping container to check on Lily, praying she was safe.
I found her exactly where I had left her, bravely clutching her pink duvet in the dark.
She looked up at me with massive, tear-filled eyes and reached her tiny arms out.
I pulled her tightly into my chest, completely overwhelmed by relief and love.
She buried her face in my shoulder and softly whispered the word "Mommy."

My heart swelled with an incredible emotion I had never expected to feel in this dark world.
I looked back at Gabriel, who was watching us with a weary, beautiful smile.
