Chapter 10 - A Beautiful Illusion

Six peaceful months had passed since the terrifying bloodbath at the Brooklyn docks.
The dark, violent shadows of Gabriel’s former life had been entirely erased from our new reality.
We were living in a stunning, heavily guarded estate nestled deep in the quiet Hamptons.
My mother had been transferred to the absolute best private cancer facility in the country.
Gabriel had personally funded an entire medical wing, and her latest scans showed complete remission.
Lily was no longer a silent, traumatized shadow hiding beneath a pink duvet.
She was a vibrant, incredibly happy child who laughed constantly and loved playing in the sunshine.
She called me Mom every single day, and I loved her fiercely as if she were my own blood.
Gabriel and I had quietly married in a beautiful garden ceremony surrounded by white roses.
He had officially retired from the violent underworld, passing the legitimate businesses to a board of directors.
He was finally the gentle, deeply loving husband and father he was always truly meant to be.
I stood on the massive wooden deck, watching Gabriel chase Lily through the sprinklers with pure joy.
Our family was absolutely perfect, and the terrifying nightmares were finally a thing of the past.
Later that afternoon, the daily mail arrived, having been thoroughly cleared by our elite security team.
I walked into the kitchen and noticed a small, bright pink envelope sitting alone on the marble counter.
It was elegantly addressed directly to Lily, but there was absolutely no return address.
I carefully opened the seal and pulled out a high-resolution photograph of the armored SUV explosion.

A small handwritten note was written in incredibly neat, blood-red ink on the back of the photo.
The elegant handwriting read: "Biological mothers never truly die, and I am finally coming back for my daughter."
