Chapter 7 - The Master of Lies

The person bound to the wooden chair was not my fragile, sick mother.

It was a frail, elderly man wearing a torn suit and a bloodied dress shirt.

Gabriel staggered backward, his face draining of all color as he recognized the hostage.

It was Don Carmine, Gabriel’s first mentor and the former undisputed king of the New York mafia.

Everyone in the underworld believed Don Carmine had died peacefully of a heart attack a decade ago.

Silas smiled wickedly and revealed that he had kept the old man imprisoned in a secret basement for ten years.

Silas planned to force Don Carmine to legally sign over the entire criminal empire to him tonight.

I panicked, wondering where my mother was if she wasn't at the shipping yard.

Gabriel roared in absolute fury and raised his weapon toward his traitorous brother.

Silas quickly pressed a cold pistol directly against the old man’s gray head.

He demanded that Gabriel drop his weapons and surrender, or the mentor would die instantly.

Gabriel hesitated for a fraction of a second, torn between his loyalty and his life.

In that brief moment, I noticed a sniper perfectly positioned on top of a nearby crane.

The red laser sight was steadily moving directly toward Gabriel’s unprotected back.

I did not have time to scream a warning over the roaring wind.

I raised the heavy pistol Gabriel had given me and aimed blindly at the sniper.

The powerful recoil sent a sharp pain shooting entirely through my arm as the gun fired.

My bullet sparked against the metal crane, successfully distracting the sniper for a crucial second.

Gabriel instantly dropped to the ground as the sniper's bullet flew harmlessly over his head.

The deafening sound of my gunshot officially ignited a massive, chaotic firefight.

Gabriel’s hidden loyalists emerged from the shadows and began firing fiercely at Silas’s men.

Silas cursed loudly and dragged the old man behind a large metal crate for cover.

Suddenly, the passenger door of a black van parked near Silas swung violently open.

Celeste stepped out of the van, holding a gun directly to the head of my terrified mother.
