Chapter 2 - The Spider's Web

Celeste stepped into the room with the casual grace of a deadly predator.

She closed the door behind her and leaned casually against the thick wood.

I held Lily tighter, feeling the little girl's heart hammering violently against my chest.

Celeste smiled sweetly and complimented me on how well I was doing with her niece.

She slowly raised the photograph of my sick mother so I could see it clearly.

She whispered that my mother’s hospital room was currently completely unguarded.

A wave of pure nausea washed over me as the threat became terrifyingly clear.

Celeste walked closer and pulled a small, unlabeled glass vial from her coat pocket.

She calmly instructed me to pour the liquid into Lily’s water cup immediately.

She claimed it was just a strong sedative to make the child look completely mentally unstable.

If Lily was deemed insane, no one would ever believe her wild story about the bad lady on the phone.

Celeste promised that if I did this one simple favor, my mother’s medical bills would be instantly paid in full.

She also promised that if I refused, my mother's life support would be tragically unplugged tonight.

I stared at the vial, my mind racing desperately for a way out of this nightmare.

I knew that giving this unknown drug to a starving four-year-old could easily kill her.

I looked at Lily's innocent face, completely unable to commit such an evil act.

Suddenly, the bedroom door was violently kicked open from the outside.

Gabriel stood in the doorway, his weapon drawn and aimed directly at his sister's chest.

He coldly stated that he had heard every single word she just said through the hidden security microphones.

Celeste did not look surprised, nor did she drop the glass vial.

Instead, she began to laugh uncontrollably as she pressed a small button on her smartphone.

The entire penthouse plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

Heavy, automatic gunfire instantly erupted from the living room directly outside our door.
