Chapter 4 - Ghosts of the Past
Silas smiled warmly, but his eyes were as cold as a frozen grave.
He casually aimed his heavy rifle directly at Gabriel's chest.
He mocked Gabriel, saying that ruling the empire had clearly made him soft and careless.
Gabriel stepped firmly in front of me, completely blocking Silas's line of sight to Lily.
He angrily demanded to know why his own brother had ordered a hit on his wife and child.
Silas coldly replied that the empire belonged to the strongest, and Gabriel's love for his family made him weak.
Silas admitted he had partnered with Celeste to permanently erase Gabriel’s entire bloodline.
While the two brothers spoke, I quietly noticed a set of keys resting on the hood of a nearby sports car.
I knew Gabriel could not win a firefight against a heavily armed ghost.
I slowly backed up, keeping Lily hidden behind my legs in the shadows.
Gabriel noticed my movement and instantly understood my desperate plan.
He suddenly yelled and fired his weapon wildly at Silas to create a chaotic distraction.
I lunged for the keys, scooped Lily into my arms, and threw us into the back seat of the car.
Gabriel sprinted across the garage under a hail of heavy bullets.
He dove into the passenger seat just as I slammed my foot on the gas pedal.
The sports car's engine roared to life with a deafening screech.
I drove the car aggressively toward the heavy metal security gates.
Silas fired relentlessly, shattering our rear window into a million sharp pieces.
We burst through the wooden barricade and sped out into the rainy New York night.
I drove blindly for ten minutes until my shaking hands could no longer grip the steering wheel.
Gabriel finally told me to pull over into a dark, abandoned alleyway.
He checked Lily to ensure she was not harmed by the flying glass.
Then he pulled out a small electronic scanner from his tactical vest and ran it over Lily.
