Chapter 9 - The Rescue

I gasped desperately for air, the sharp pain in my ribs threatening to completely paralyze my body.
Victor Vance raised the lethal syringe high above Gwen’s fragile, sleeping form, completely preparing to strike.
I knew I could not possibly climb the concrete stairs in time to stop the deadly injection.
I reached blindly into my tactical jacket pocket, my fingers desperately searching for anything I could use as a weapon.
My hand closed tightly around the heavy brass bookend I had used to smash Margaret’s hidden safe earlier that evening.
I pushed myself up onto one knee, ignoring the agonizing, blinding pain shooting through my entire chest.
With every last ounce of combat strength I had left, I hurled the heavy brass object directly at Victor’s head.
The heavy metal sailed perfectly through the air and smashed violently into the side of Victor’s skull.
He screamed in pure agony, completely missing his deadly strike and dropping the lethal syringe onto the floor.
He stumbled backward, clutching his heavily bleeding head, completely disoriented by the brutal, unexpected impact.
I did not waste a single second of the massive advantage I had just created.
I charged up the concrete stairs like a wild animal, tackling Victor brutally to the hard floor before he could recover.
I unleashed four years of built-up combat rage, raining heavy, merciless punches down onto his face until he stopped fighting back.
Victor went completely limp beneath me, his terrifying reign of manipulation and violence finally brought to a brutal end.
I stood up, breathing heavily, my knuckles heavily bruised and covered in the ruthless loan shark's blood.
I ran over to Gwen’s hospital bed, gently pulling her close to my chest and weeping openly into her thin hospital gown.
The heavy metal stairwell doors suddenly burst open, and a highly armed team of federal military police officers swarmed the landing.
Major Hayes rushed forward, his tactical weapon drawn, taking immediate control of the highly chaotic situation.
The officers quickly secured Victor in heavy steel handcuffs, dragging his unconscious, bleeding body down the stairs to a waiting federal transport vehicle.
Major Hayes placed a firm, comforting hand on my shoulder, proudly telling me that the terrifying nightmare was finally over.
Medical teams flooded the stairwell minutes later, carefully rushing Gwen back into the highly secure, heavily guarded intensive care unit.
The very next morning, the brilliant surgical team successfully performed the grueling, ten-hour procedure to remove the cancer from Gwen’s body.
I sat anxiously in the waiting room, completely exhausted but feeling a massive, overwhelming sense of total peace.
Dr. Evans finally walked out of the surgical wing, a massive, genuine smile lighting up his tired, elderly face.
He proudly announced that they had successfully removed the entire tumor, and Gwen was officially, completely cancer-free.
I collapsed into the doctor's arms, thanking him endlessly for saving the life of the only woman I had ever truly loved.
Two weeks later, the massive federal court case officially concluded with highly satisfying, permanent results.
Victor Vance was sentenced to federal prison for the rest of his natural life for attempted murder and massive financial fraud.
Margaret and Paige were both handed thirty-year federal sentences, completely stripped of all their stolen luxury assets.
The massive, beautiful house they had proudly stolen was officially seized by the government and completely demolished.
I used the remainder of my actual, hard-earned military savings to buy a beautiful, quiet little cottage near the ocean.
Gwen was completely recovering, her beautiful, bright smile finally returning to her incredibly strong, resilient face.
