Chapter 5 - The Stolen Letters

The luxurious dining room descended into absolute, chaotic silence.

Margaret stared up at me from her knees on the hardwood floor, her eyes wide with total disbelief.

Paige stopped screaming at Victor and slowly backed away toward the kitchen door.

"What do you mean you don't have the money?" Margaret whispered, her voice trembling violently.

I set my champagne glass down on the table with a sharp, decisive clink.

I looked at the crowd of wealthy, superficial guests who were now staring at my family in complete disgust.

I explained loudly that military combat bonuses do not equal half a million dollars.

I told everyone in the room that I had made up the entire story to see how deeply their greed ran.

Victor Vance threw his head back and laughed, a harsh, booming sound that echoed off the high ceiling.

He looked at Margaret with absolute contempt, realizing she had tried to stall him with a complete lie.

"You have until midnight to vacate my property," Victor told my mother coldly.

Margaret lunged toward me, her perfectly manicured nails curled like predatory claws.

She screamed that I was a worthless, ungrateful son who had just ruined their entire lives.

One of Victor’s massive bodyguards easily stepped in front of her, shoving her forcefully back onto the floor.

I ignored her hysterical sobbing and turned my attention directly to Paige, who was trying to slip out the back door.

I demanded that Paige hand over the keys to the master bedroom immediately.

Paige refused, crying frantically that I had no right to search their personal belongings.

I pulled out my phone and showed her the digital copy of the forged life insurance cancellation form.

I promised her that if she didn't give me the keys, I would call the federal military police to arrest her for fraud right now.

Paige practically threw the keys at my chest, completely dissolving into terrified, pathetic tears.

I walked upstairs, leaving the destroyed dinner party and the ruthless loan shark to deal with the fallout.

I unlocked the heavy door to Margaret’s master bedroom and stepped inside the lavish suite.

The room was filled with expensive designer clothes, imported perfumes, and ridiculous luxury items bought with my blood money.

I immediately went to the large walk-in closet and began tearing through the expensive shoe boxes on the top shelf.

Behind a row of designer heels, I found a heavy, locked steel safe hidden in the drywall.

I used a heavy brass bookend from the nightstand to smash the digital keypad until the locking mechanism completely shattered.

I pulled the heavy steel door open, finally exposing the darkest secrets of my twisted family.

Inside the safe were dozens of unopened, bundled letters that I had written to Gwen from the combat zone.

My heart physically ached as I realized my wife had spent four years thinking I had abandoned her.

Next to the letters was a thick folder containing the fraudulent, two-million-dollar life insurance policy they had taken out on Gwen.

But it was the small, unmarked USB flash drive sitting in the very back of the safe that caught my attention.

I plugged the drive into Margaret’s expensive laptop sitting on the nearby vanity desk.

A hidden video file instantly popped up on the screen, dated three months ago.

I clicked play, and my blood instantly turned to absolute ice.

The video showed Margaret and Paige standing in the kitchen, carefully crushing white pills into a bowl of soup.

They were laughing wildly about how the rat poison was making Gwen’s hair fall out much faster than the cancer ever could.
