Chapter 7 - The Final Threat

I dropped my heavy duffel bag and lunged across the luxury hotel room with lethal intent.

My military training took over completely as I tackled the strange man in the dark suit to the floor.

I pinned him down violently, pressing my forearm directly against his throat to cut off his airway.

The man gasped desperately for air, wildly tapping the carpet to signal his immediate surrender.

"I am the hotel doctor!" the man choked out, his face turning a terrifying shade of purple.

I froze instantly, releasing my brutal grip and scrambling backward to check on my unconscious wife.

The doctor coughed heavily, fixing his tie and quickly explaining the terrifying situation.

He said the hotel staff had heard a loud crash from inside the room and found Gwen collapsed on the floor.

He was just trying to stabilize her incredibly weak pulse while waiting for the emergency paramedics to arrive.

I fell to my knees beside Gwen, gently brushing the tears from her pale, fragile face.

The loud sirens of the approaching ambulance wailed through the city streets, growing louder by the second.

The paramedics rushed into the hotel room, quickly loading Gwen onto a stretcher and applying an oxygen mask.

I rode in the back of the ambulance, tightly holding her cold hand and praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in four long years.

We arrived at the emergency room, and the medical team immediately rushed her through the double doors into the intensive care unit.

I paced the sterile hospital waiting room for three agonizing hours, terrified that the rat poison had finally destroyed her organs.

Finally, Dr. Evans walked out of the surgical wing, his surgical scrubs heavily stained with blood.

He took off his mask and offered me a small, completely exhausted smile of immense relief.

He told me that Gwen’s collapse was actually caused by severe dehydration and prolonged malnutrition, not the poison.

He confirmed that her vital organs were surprisingly strong, and they were preparing to perform the cancer surgery first thing in the morning.

I collapsed into a plastic waiting room chair, weeping tears of absolute, unfiltered joy.

My phone vibrated violently in my pocket, displaying a secure incoming call from Major Hayes at the federal detention center.

I wiped my tired eyes and answered the call, expecting an update on Margaret and Paige’s federal booking process.

Major Hayes did not sound victorious or relieved; his voice was extremely tense and urgent.

He told me that during Margaret’s intense interrogation, she completely broke down and confessed to the poisoning.

But Margaret insisted that she and Paige had never actually bought the lethal rat poison themselves.

She claimed a mysterious third party had supplied them with the undetectable toxins and the fraudulent life insurance paperwork.

Major Hayes warned me that this dangerous mastermind was a highly sophisticated criminal who stood to gain a massive cut of the two million dollar payout.

He said the federal agents were currently tracing the digital origin of the fraudulent insurance policy.

Before he could finish his sentence, a loud, terrifying crash echoed from the intensive care unit down the hallway.

The hospital fire alarm suddenly began blaring with a deafening, piercing shriek that rattled my teeth.

Nurses and doctors sprinted frantically out of the intensive care wing, screaming about a massive chemical fire in the ward.

I dropped my phone and sprinted directly into the thick, blinding gray smoke toward Gwen’s private recovery room.

Through the terrifying haze, I saw a tall figure wearing a stolen doctor's coat pushing Gwen’s hospital bed rapidly toward the emergency exit stairs.
