Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

I stared at Paige’s forged signature on the glowing computer screen until my vision blurred with pure rage.
My sister had literally traded my wife’s chance at survival for fifty thousand dollars in cash.
I thanked Dr. Evans for his time and asked him to print a certified copy of the insurance cancellation record.
I folded the damning evidence carefully and placed it in my pocket right next to the loan document.
I walked back into the recovery room where Gwen was resting peacefully under a warm, clean blanket.
I held her fragile hand and promised her that the surgery was scheduled and everything was going to be fine.
I transferred her to a secure, private recovery hotel downtown, strictly instructing the staff not to allow any visitors.
I could not risk taking her back to that toxic house while I prepared to destroy my family.
I took a deep breath, composed my facial expression into a mask of calm ignorance, and drove back home.
When I walked through the front door, the atmosphere in the house was completely chaotic.
Margaret was pacing furiously in the living room, her expensive silk robe violently swishing around her ankles.
Paige was sitting on the velvet sofa, furiously typing on her brand-new smartphone.
Margaret stopped pacing the moment she saw me and aggressively demanded to know where the bald girl was.
I smiled calmly and said I had sent Gwen away to stay with some distant relatives in the countryside.
I lied and told them Gwen was too embarrassed by her appearance to stay for our upcoming wealth celebration.
Margaret’s face instantly relaxed into a look of absolute relief and cruel satisfaction.
She said it was for the best because they could not have guests looking at such a pathetic, sickly creature.
Paige chimed in, demanding to know exactly what time the four hundred thousand dollars would hit the joint account tomorrow.
She said she needed to make a massive down payment on a luxury sports car before the dealership closed.
I assured them the military wire transfer was fully authorized and would clear by noon the next day.
I suggested we host a lavish dinner party tonight to celebrate our family’s incredible new financial status.
Margaret clapped her hands together in sheer delight, immediately picking up the phone to hire a private caterer.
She told Paige to invite all of their wealthy, elite friends to show off their returning war hero.
I casually mentioned that I was going to invite a few of my old military buddies to join the celebration.
Margaret waved her hand dismissively, saying I could invite anyone I wanted as long as they dressed nicely.
She had absolutely no idea that I had just finalized my guest list.
And the first person I was inviting was Victor Vance, the ruthless loan shark who technically owned her house.
I walked upstairs to my childhood bedroom, locking the door securely behind me.
I opened my military duffel bag and pulled out a small, encrypted recording device.
I slid it under the floorboards near the heating vent that connected directly to Margaret’s master bedroom below.
As I adjusted the microphone, I heard my mother and sister talking quietly in the room directly beneath me.
I put on the headphones, intending to listen to them brag about their impending wealth.
Instead, I heard Margaret whisper something that made the blood freeze entirely in my veins.

She told Paige to call the life insurance company and confirm the new policy was active.
Because if Gwen died at her relatives' house, they needed to make sure they collected the two million dollar death benefit.
