Chapter 10 - The Hidden Truth

I sat on the wooden floor of our beautiful new living room, staring out the window at the peaceful ocean waves.

Gwen was resting comfortably in the master bedroom, her soft, beautiful hair finally beginning to grow back in thick curls.

She was eating normally again, her incredible strength and vibrant energy returning more and more every single day.

We had successfully survived the absolute darkest, most terrifying chapter of our lives, and we had finally won.

I reached into the final cardboard moving box to unpack a few old, sentimental items from my distant childhood.

I pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden jewelry box that had belonged to my late father before he passed away.

As I lifted the heavy wooden box, my thumb accidentally pressed firmly against a hidden, loose panel on the bottom.

A secret, completely hidden compartment suddenly clicked open, and several small items spilled out onto the floor.

I frowned in deep confusion, slowly picking up the objects that had been completely concealed for entirely unknown reasons.

There were dozens of tiny, empty glass vials that perfectly matched the exact description of the lethal rat poison Margaret had used.

Right next to the highly terrifying vials was a small, leather-bound notebook filled with extremely detailed, handwritten daily entries.

I opened the old journal, and my heart completely stopped beating in my chest as I recognized the familiar, elegant handwriting.

The journal did not belong to my mother, Margaret, nor did it belong to my cruel sister, Paige.

The handwriting belonged entirely and unmistakably to my fragile, seemingly innocent wife, Gwen.

I read the highly detailed entries in absolute, paralyzing horror as the devastating truth finally revealed itself.

Gwen had not been the helpless, innocent victim of a ruthless, violent family poisoning scheme at all.

She had systematically and deliberately poisoned herself with incredibly small, non-lethal doses of the toxic chemicals.

She had purposefully made her own hair fall out, intentionally starved herself, and brilliantly faked her absolute misery to frame Margaret and Paige.

She knew about the massive, fraudulent life insurance policy the moment Victor Vance and my mother secretly created it.

She had patiently endured the horrific, damp storage room, expertly playing the role of the tragic, dying victim for four long years.

She orchestrated the entire incredible spectacle just so I would come home and utterly destroy my family with federal military force.

I dropped the leather journal onto the floor, my hands shaking violently as I realized I was completely married to a brilliant, terrifying mastermind.

The soft, gentle creak of the bedroom door slowly opening completely shattered the heavy silence in the living room.

I turned around slowly, looking directly at my beautiful, incredibly dangerous wife standing in the doorway.

Gwen smiled warmly, her bright eyes locking perfectly onto the empty poison vials scattered across the floor.

"I told you I would do absolutely anything to make sure it was just the two of us forever, David," she whispered sweetly.
