Chapter 4 - The Dinner Party

I sat in absolute silence on my bedroom floor, the horrific words echoing through my headphones.
They had not just canceled Gwen's health insurance to steal the cash equity.
They had secretly taken out a massive, fraudulent life insurance policy on my wife, naming themselves as the sole beneficiaries.
They were actively banking on her dying from cancer so they could become millionaires.
I carefully packed the recording device away, my hands shaking with a terrifying, cold fury.
I walked downstairs just as the private catering team began setting up the lavish dining room.
Crystal glasses, silver silverware, and expensive floral arrangements covered every inch of the long mahogany table.
Margaret and Paige were dressed in stunning designer gowns, dripping in heavy gold jewelry.
They greeted their wealthy, superficial guests with fake, overly enthusiastic smiles and loud laughter.
I wore my formal military dress uniform, playing the part of the proud, successful son perfectly.
I shook hands, smiled at their friends, and listened to Margaret brag endlessly about my fictional incoming wealth.
Just as the caterers began serving the expensive appetizers, the heavy front door knocker slammed loudly.
The entire room went quiet as I confidently walked over and pulled the heavy wooden door open.
Standing on the porch was Victor Vance, flanked by two massive, intimidating bodyguards in dark suits.
Victor was a terrifying man with cold, dead eyes and a jagged scar running down his jawline.
Margaret’s face drained of all color, and her crystal wine glass slipped from her trembling fingers, shattering on the hardwood floor.
Paige gasped loudly, attempting to hide behind one of the tall floral arrangements.
I smiled warmly, extending my hand to the ruthless criminal standing on my porch.
I loudly welcomed Victor to the party, introducing him to the confused guests as a very close family associate.
Victor smirked, shaking my hand firmly before stepping into the luxurious dining room.
He looked around at the expensive decorations, the catered food, and the terrified faces of my mother and sister.
He casually walked over to Margaret, who was shaking violently in her designer gown.
He leaned in close to her ear and whispered something that made her knees completely buckle.
I watched the glorious panic set in, knowing Victor was here to collect his debt.
I tapped my fork against my crystal glass, drawing the attention of every single guest in the room.
I announced that it was time to make a very special toast to my loving, devoted family.
I raised my glass and praised Margaret and Paige for taking such incredible care of my finances while I was deployed.
The guests politely raised their glasses, completely unaware of the massive tension suffocating the room.
Victor chuckled darkly, reaching into the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket.
He pulled out a thick, legally binding document and slammed it aggressively onto the center of the dining table.
He announced to the entire room that Margaret had used my forged signature to guarantee a two hundred thousand dollar loan.
The wealthy guests gasped in shock, immediately whispering frantically to one another.
Victor looked directly at me and smiled a very dangerous, calculated smile.
He told me that my mother’s final payment was due by midnight tonight, or he was legally seizing the entire property.
Margaret burst into hysterical tears, dropping to her knees and begging me to wire the four hundred thousand dollars right now.
Paige screamed at Victor, telling him my military money would cover everything by noon tomorrow.
I took a slow, deliberate sip of my expensive champagne.

Then I looked down at my weeping mother and delivered the final, crushing blow.
I told her I didn't have four hundred thousand dollars, and I never did.
