Chapter 9 - The Double Cross

Arthur collapsed onto the marble floor, a look of profound shock frozen on his dying face.

Dr. Vance stepped over the bleeding lawyer and kicked the scalpel far out of Marcus's reach.

"Arthur was entirely too greedy, and he was never going to share the final tech patents with me," Vance explained coldly.

The doctor revealed that he had planned to eliminate the lawyer and frame Marcus for the murder all along.

He was going to kill Marcus, detonate the vest, and claim the entire fortune as the sole surviving trustee.

Vance raised the gun again, aiming it carefully at Eleanor's heart.

Little Leo suddenly stomped hard on the doctor's foot, throwing Vance entirely off balance.

The gun fired wildly into the ceiling, shattering the massive crystal chandelier above them.

Marcus did not waste the distraction.

He lunged forward, ignoring the burning ache in his newly recovered legs, and slammed Vance into the wall.

He punched the corrupt doctor squarely in the jaw, knocking him completely unconscious on the floor.

Eleanor rushed forward with shaking hands and carefully unbuckled the explosive vest from her terrified son.

She tossed the dangerous vest safely down a long hallway, wrapping Leo in a desperate, protective embrace.

Marcus stood up, breathing heavily, feeling the true weight of his freedom for the very first time.

The piercing sound of dozens of police sirens began to echo loudly up the long driveway.

Eleanor smiled through her tears, revealing that she had forwarded all the stolen server data directly to the FBI before they crashed the gates.
