Chapter 5 - The Hostile Diagnosis

Dr. Vance smiled a cold, clinical smile through the heavy glass doors of the lobby.

He was the brilliant neurosurgeon who had personally diagnosed Marcus with permanent spinal damage eleven years ago.

Marcus realized that Vance had been using the threat of explosives to keep his own security team in line.

Eleanor gripped the steering wheel of the van tightly, her knuckles turning completely white.

"If we drive away now, we will be running and hiding from these monsters for the rest of our lives," she whispered.

Marcus nodded slowly, knowing this was their only chance to secure a future for their son.

He told Eleanor to drive the heavy delivery van around to the underground loading dock.

They snuck past the sleeping dock manager and infiltrated the building through the freight elevator.

Marcus used his old administrative passwords, which surprisingly had never been deleted from the central mainframe.

They bypassed the security cameras and made their way to the highly secure server room on the fiftieth floor.

Marcus felt a powerful surge of confidence as his fingers flew across the digital keypad of the vault door.

The heavy steel door hissed open, revealing rows of blinking servers holding the damning evidence.

He quickly plugged a portable hard drive into the main terminal and initiated the massive data download.

The screen showed the transfer would take exactly three minutes to complete.

Suddenly, the lights in the server room completely shut off, plunging them into absolute darkness.

"You really should have stayed in your chair, Marcus," Dr. Vance's voice echoed through the dark room.
