Chapter 3 - The Ghost

The dial tone echoed in Marcus's ear like a final death sentence.
The lawyer he trusted with his entire fortune was the architect of his physical prison.
He dropped the expensive phone into a nearby trash can, knowing Arthur would use it to track his location.
He turned to the quiet boy, who was watching him with those piercing, strangely familiar green eyes.
"Who are you, and how did you know how to wake up my nerves?" Marcus asked gently.
The boy pulled a crumpled, faded photograph from his torn jacket pocket and handed it over.
Marcus stared at the picture, his heart stopping completely in his chest.
It was a photograph of his beautiful fiancée, Eleanor, who had supposedly died in the passenger seat during his car crash.
"My name is Leo, and my mother told me how to find you," the boy whispered nervously.
Marcus felt hot tears streaming down his face as he realized the woman he loved was still alive.
Leo led Marcus through a maze of dark alleys to a rundown apartment building on the edge of the city.
Marcus climbed the three flights of stairs, his legs screaming in protest with every single agonizing step.
Leo opened the rusty door to a dimly lit room, where a woman was sitting at a small kitchen table.
Eleanor turned around, looking exactly as beautiful as the day Marcus had lost her.
She rushed forward and threw her arms around him, sobbing into his shoulder.

"They told me if I ever tried to contact you, they would murder our son," she cried out.
Before Marcus could even process that he was a father, the wooden front door was violently kicked off its hinges.
