Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The blinding flash of lightning completely illuminated the dark, rain-slicked pier.
Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the psychotic Marcus was Jessica, Ethan’s secret mistress.
She was holding an umbrella over Marcus, smiling with absolutely no remorse.
I stepped out of the armored sedan, my father flanking me with his heavy shotgun raised.
"How are you involved in this nightmare, Jessica?" I screamed over the roaring thunder.
Jessica laughed, tossing her wet hair back as she looked at me with pure hatred.
"Ethan was a pathetic, easily manipulated idiot," Jessica shouted back over the storm.
"I never loved him; I only used his banking credentials to help Marcus steal your father's offshore funds."
Marcus had orchestrated the entire affair, using Jessica to infiltrate Ethan's life and steal his money.
They needed the cartel to attack the estate tonight to completely distract my father's security.
"Hand over the baby right now, Marcus, or I will blow you in half," my father threatened dangerously.
Marcus casually dangled the small, wrapped bundle dangerously close to the crashing black waves.
"I want the access codes to the Pentagon's black budget accounts, General," Marcus demanded.
"You give me the codes, and you can have this screaming little brat back."
My father did not hesitate to choose his grandson's life over national security secrets.
He pulled a heavy, encrypted flash drive from his tactical vest and tossed it onto the wet wooden planks.
"Take the drive and give me the child," my father ordered, keeping his weapon perfectly steady.
Jessica eagerly scurried forward and snatched the glowing flash drive from the puddles.
She plugged it into a small tablet, confirming that the multi-billion dollar accounts were unlocked.
"We have the money, Marcus, drop the kid and let's go," Jessica urged excitedly.
Marcus smiled a terrifying, evil smile and looked directly into my terrified eyes.
"I told you five years ago that if I couldn't have you, nobody could," Marcus whispered coldly.
He opened his arms entirely and dropped the wrapped bundle directly into the violent ocean.
I screamed in absolute agony and sprinted wildly toward the edge of the pier to jump in.
But my father grabbed my waist and threw me backward onto the wet wood.
Marcus and Jessica turned to run toward their waiting speedboat in the darkness.
My father did not fire his shotgun at them as they fled.
Instead, he reached into his pocket and pressed a small red button on a remote control.
The encrypted flash drive Jessica was holding violently exploded, instantly incinerating them both on the dock.

I crawled toward the edge of the pier, sobbing uncontrollably for my lost baby.
Then, the driver of our armored sedan stepped out of the vehicle holding a crying infant.
