Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

I screamed so loudly that it tore the fresh stitches in my abdomen.

My father and his security team rushed into the nursery with their weapons drawn.

The cold night wind howled through the shattered glass, blowing the curtains wildly.

Noah was gone, and there was absolutely no trace of whoever had taken him.

"Lock down the entire perimeter, nobody leaves this estate alive!" my father roared furiously.

I collapsed onto the floor, clutching the empty baby blanket to my chest while sobbing hysterically.

Ethan and his entire insane family were already in federal custody.

There was absolutely no one left who would want to harm me or my newborn son.

The head of security pointed his flashlight at a piece of paper pinned to the wall with a tactical knife.

My father ripped the knife out and read the note, his face draining of all color.

He slowly handed the paper to me with violently shaking hands.

The note read: "I always told you I would come back for what is mine, Claire."

I stopped breathing as I recognized the sharp, jagged handwriting instantly.

It belonged to Marcus, my violently abusive ex-fiancé who had supposedly died in a boat explosion five years ago.

Marcus was the primary reason my father had forced me to live under a fake identity.

We truly believed he had perished while trying to flee the country with stolen military secrets.

But he had clearly faked his own death and waited patiently for the perfect moment to strike.

"He used Ethan's chaotic attack as a perfect distraction to slip past our defenses," my father realized grimly.

Marcus knew exactly how my father's security protocols worked because he used to be his top lieutenant.

My phone suddenly vibrated with a single, terrifying text message containing GPS coordinates.

The location pinned was an abandoned shipyard located entirely outside the city limits.

"If you bring the police, the baby goes into the ocean," the follow-up text warned.

My father loaded a heavy tactical shotgun with a look of absolute, unadulterated murder in his eyes.

"We are not bringing the police, we are bringing hell," Dad declared firmly.

I grabbed my heavy winter coat, completely ignoring the agonizing pain in my stomach.

I was not going to sit at home while a psychopath threatened my child.

We jumped into the armored black sedan and tore out of the estate at blinding speed.

We arrived at the desolate, rusting shipyard just as a massive thunderstorm began to break.

Standing at the end of the wooden pier, holding a tiny bundle over the dark water, was Marcus.

But when lightning flashed across the sky, I saw someone else standing right beside him.
