Chapter 7 - The Burning Obsession

Diane's face on the video screen was contorted into a mask of pure, unhinged madness.
"You ruined my son's perfect life, Claire!" she screamed, holding the flickering match.
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding so hard it physically hurt my ribs.
She was standing in the exact spot where I had painted Noah's name on the nursery wall.
"Diane, please stop, you are going to destroy yourself," I pleaded into the phone.
She let out a hysterical laugh and tipped the match dangerously close to the soaked carpet.
"Ethan is sitting in a federal holding cell because of your arrogant father!" she yelled.
She demanded that my father drop all the charges against Ethan and Richard immediately.
If we did not comply, she promised to burn my apartment and everything inside it to the ground.
My father walked up behind me and calmly took the phone from my trembling hand.
"Diane, this is General Morgan," he said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"Go ahead and drop the match."
My eyes widened in sheer panic as I tried to grab the phone back from him.
Diane looked completely stunned by his cold, calculated response.
"I will do it, I swear I will burn everything!" she shrieked, hesitating for a second.
"I highly encourage it," my father replied smoothly.
"Because my daughter moved out of that apartment three days before she went into labor."
Diane's jaw dropped as she looked around the beautifully decorated nursery.
"What are you talking about, all her baby things are right here!" she yelled defensively.
My father smiled his signature predatory smile directly into the camera lens.
"That building was purchased by the FBI yesterday as part of a massive sting operation against your husband."
"The furniture is entirely fake, and the gasoline you poured is actually a non-flammable tracking gel."
Diane dropped the match onto the carpet, completely expecting a massive inferno to erupt.
The match simply sizzled and died in the clear liquid without even a spark.
Before she could scream again, the door to the nursery was kicked open by federal agents.
We watched live on the video call as they tackled Diane to the floor and read her Miranda rights.
My father hung up the phone and handed it back to me with a gentle nod.
"The entire family is finally locked in cages where they belong," he assured me.
I let out a massive sigh of relief, leaning my head against his strong shoulder.
We had survived the most terrifying night of my entire life.
But as I walked back to the estate's private nursery to check on Noah, I noticed something horrifying.
May you like
The heavy glass window of the nursery was completely shattered from the outside.
And Noah's crib was completely empty.
