Chapter 5 - The Darkness

The sudden darkness was instantly broken by the glow of emergency backup lights.

My father's security team moved with terrifying, coordinated precision, drawing their weapons.

"They cut the main fiber-optic lines and the power grid," the head of security announced.

This was not the work of a desperate, cheating husband throwing a tantrum at the gate.

Ethan did not possess the tactical knowledge to black out a military-grade fortress.

"Move Claire and the baby to the underground panic room immediately," my father ordered.

Two heavily armed guards escorted me down the dark hallway toward the nursery.

I scooped Noah out of his crib, holding his tiny, fragile body tightly against my chest.

My surgical incision burned with every step, but absolute terror fueled my adrenaline.

We descended a hidden spiral staircase into a steel-reinforced bunker deep beneath the house.

The heavy vault door slammed shut behind us, sealing us in absolute, soundproof safety.

I sat on a small cot, rocking Noah while staring at the security monitors on the wall.

The cameras had switched to infrared, showing glowing figures moving through the estate grounds.

Dozens of highly trained mercenaries were scaling the walls, completely bypassing the local police.

Ethan was nowhere to be seen on the monitors anymore.

"Who are these people?" I whispered to the guard standing by the door.

The guard loaded a fresh magazine into his rifle and did not look away from the screen.

"Your husband didn't just embezzle from his company, ma'am."

"He stole money from a major international cartel to fund his double life."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

Ethan had used my name on the forged documents to launder money for a criminal syndicate.

They weren't here to help Ethan get custody of his son.

They were here to kidnap me and Noah to force my father to pay off Ethan's massive debt.

On the screen, I watched my father step out onto the front porch completely unarmed.

He calmly raised his hands as four mercenaries aimed their laser sights at his chest.

The leader of the assault team stepped forward and removed his tactical mask.

May you like

I gasped loudly, covering my mouth to stifle the noise.

The leader of the cartel's hit squad was Ethan's father, Richard.
