Chapter 4 - The Second Family

I stared at the security monitor in absolute, paralyzing shock.

Ethan was aggressively shaking the iron gates, demanding to be let onto the property.

The toddler in his arms was screaming, clearly terrified of Ethan's erratic behavior.

"Whose child is that?" I asked, though a sickening dread had already settled in my stomach.

My father's jaw clenched as he zoomed in on the high-definition camera feed.

"That is Jessica's son, Claire."

"He is two years old, which means Ethan's affair started before you were even married."

I felt physically ill, realizing my entire marriage had been an elaborate, calculated lie.

Ethan wasn't just a selfish husband; he was a sociopath living a complete double life.

"Why did he bring the child here?" I asked, clutching my fresh surgical dressing.

The head of security tapped an earpiece and listened intently to a radio transmission.

"Ethan is claiming he has legal custody of Noah and is demanding we surrender your baby," the guard reported.

My father let out a harsh, humorless laugh.

"He has lost his mind if he thinks he can breach this compound."

We watched on the screen as local police cruisers suddenly pulled up behind Ethan.

I thought they were there to arrest him for the fraud my father had exposed.

Instead, the police officers began talking casually with Ethan, nodding in agreement with whatever he was saying.

One of the officers walked up to the intercom and pressed the call button.

"General Morgan, we have a signed court order to return a kidnapped infant to his legal father," the officer announced.

My father's eyes narrowed dangerously at the blatant corruption unfolding outside.

Ethan had somehow managed to get a corrupt judge to sign an emergency ex parte order within hours.

He had used his embezzled millions to buy off local law enforcement in my father's jurisdiction.

"They are going to breach the gate if we don't comply," the head of security warned.

My father walked over to a hidden wall safe and spun the combination dial.

"Nobody takes my grandson," he stated coldly.

He pulled out a heavy, tactical satellite phone that only communicated directly with the Pentagon.

"Connect me to the Governor immediately," my father commanded into the device.

May you like

But before the call could connect, the power to the entire estate violently shut off.

Everything went pitch black.
