Chapter 3 - The Fortress

The black sedan glided smoothly through the massive wrought-iron gates of my father's private estate.
I had not been back to this sprawling compound since I eloped with Ethan three years ago.
A team of private medical staff was already waiting on the front steps as the car came to a halt.
They gently helped me out and carried Noah inside to a fully equipped nursery.
My father stood in the grand foyer, his military posture as rigid and commanding as ever.
He did not offer a pitying hug, but instead gave me a look of fierce, protective determination.
"You are safe now, Claire," he promised quietly.
I collapsed into a plush chair in his study, the physical pain of my surgery finally catching up to me.
A private doctor administered proper pain medication while my father poured a glass of bourbon.
"I warned you that Ethan was hiding things, but you were too blinded by love to see it," my father said softly.
I looked at the classified folder the security agent had handed me in the car.
The photos of Ethan with another woman were just the tip of the terrifying iceberg.
"Who is she?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and heartbreak.
My father slid a thick dossier across the mahogany desk.
"Her name is Jessica, and she works in the accounting department of Ethan's firm."
"But that isn't the most disturbing part of this situation."
I opened the dossier and saw bank statements linking our joint checking account to offshore shell companies.
Ethan had been systematically siphoning my modest trust fund allowance for years.
He had complained daily about our finances, forcing me to budget our groceries while he stole thousands.
"He embezzled over two million dollars from his employer, using your name on the forged documents," Dad explained.
I gasped, realizing Ethan had set me up to take the fall for his massive corporate fraud.
If the authorities investigated, all the digital footprints would lead directly to my laptop.
My father picked up his secure phone and dialed a private federal contact.
"It is time to execute the containment protocol," my father ordered into the receiver.
I felt a brief wave of relief knowing my father was handling the legal mess.
Then the study doors burst open, and my father's head of security rushed inside.
"General, we have a massive problem at the perimeter."
He pointed to the security monitors showing the main gate of the estate.

Ethan was standing there, but he wasn't alone.
He was holding a squirming, crying toddler that looked exactly like him.
