Chapter 15 - The Perfect Cure

Dr. Aris grabbed Norah by the arm and dragged her toward a narrow ventilation shaft at the back of the room.

He shoved a heavy metal grate aside and ordered her to crawl as fast as she possibly could.

Norah scrambled into the dusty, cramped duct just as the massive blast doors finally gave way.

Heavily armed Vanguard operatives flooded the bunker, immediately raising their assault rifles.

Dr. Aris turned to face them, casually pulling a small detonator from his lab coat pocket.

He looked back at Norah, smiling sadly, and whispered that she was the only hope Vincent had left.

The old doctor pressed the red button, instantly detonating the explosive charges he had rigged around the servers.

The massive fireball completely consumed the operatives and the doctor, collapsing the bunker entrance in a shower of concrete.

Norah squeezed her eyes shut and crawled frantically through the shaking, crumbling ventilation shaft.

She emerged a mile away in a dark, abandoned subway tunnel, covered in soot and dripping blood from her neck.

She collapsed onto the cold gravel, completely exhausted and utterly alone in the dark.

As she lay there, she remembered the strange words Dr. Aris had muttered while examining her blood on the scanner.

He had gasped and mumbled that her red blood cells possessed an incredibly rare, neutralizing enzyme.

That was the exact reason why Vincent, whose mutated body rejected all human food, could effortlessly digest her cooking.

Norah was not just a lucky chef who stumbled into a mafia kingpin's good graces.

Her specific DNA was the literal, biological cure to the painful cellular decay that plagued Vincent’s mutation.

Vanguard had intentionally manipulated the mafia loan sharks to push her into Vincent’s path.

They used her to unknowingly stabilize his decaying genetics so they could finally harvest a perfect, healthy blood sample.

A sudden, harsh spotlight cut through the darkness of the subway tunnel, blinding her completely.

Heavy combat boots crunched against the gravel as three towering Vanguard soldiers surrounded her.

A tall woman wearing a pristine white suit stepped out from behind the armed men.

She smiled coldly, looking down at Norah with absolutely zero human empathy.

She introduced herself as Director Sterling, and she coldly ordered her men to secure the living cure.
