Chapter 11 - The Genetic Secret

Norah stared at the official hospital letterhead until the black ink completely blurred before her eyes.

The heavy, classified folder slipped from her trembling fingers and crashed onto the locker room floor.

Vincent was not just a ruthless mafia kingpin who had miraculously survived a deadly poisoning.

He was a biological anomaly, a genetic mutation that a shadow government agency was actively hunting.

She frantically gathered the scattered papers, shoving them back into the manila envelope.

Her mind raced back to the very first night she had served him that cheap, leftover broth.

He had not been dying from a sensitive stomach or a common gastrointestinal disease.

His mutated cellular structure had been violently rejecting human food, slowly starving him from the inside out.

Norah sprinted out of the security locker room and ran frantically down the long, carpeted hallway.

She burst through the heavy oak doors of the master study without bothering to knock.

Vincent was standing by the massive window, looking out over the sprawling, moonlit estate.

He turned around, his dark eyes instantly locking onto the classified folder clutched tightly in her hands.

He did not look surprised, angry, or betrayed by her sudden, frantic intrusion.

Instead, a profound, heartbreaking sadness completely washed over his pale, handsome face.

Vincent slowly walked over to his heavy mahogany desk and poured two glasses of amber whiskey.

He handed one to Norah and quietly asked her how much of the file she had actually read.

Norah choked back a sob, demanding to know what exactly he was and why the government was hunting him.

Vincent slowly unbuttoned his crisp white dress shirt, letting it slide off his broad shoulders.

Norah gasped aloud as she stared at his bare chest and heavily scarred back.

His skin was covered in a network of faint, glowing silver veins that pulsed slightly with his heartbeat.

He softly explained that the mafia empire was nothing more than an elaborate, heavily armed cover story.

He had spent his entire life building a criminal fortress simply to protect himself from the scientists who created him.

Before Norah could ask another question, the glass windows of the study violently shattered inward.
