Chapter 7 - The Hunted

White-hot pain exploded in my side as the jagged metal tore violently through my skin.

I stumbled backward and dropped my heavy pistol onto the floor of the wrecked jet.

David stood up slowly, laughing as dark blood poured down his face.

He told me that I was always far too weak to ever finish the job.

He reached down to grab the dropped pistol, preparing to shoot me point-blank in the chest.

I pulled the sharp metal out of my side and drove it directly into his kneecap with all my remaining strength.

He screamed in absolute agony and collapsed to the floor, instantly dropping the gun.

I kicked the weapon completely out of the plane and scrambled out the emergency exit into the night.

I held my bleeding side tightly and ran into the dense woods to find my precious daughters.

The sounds of police sirens began wailing in the distance as state troopers finally responded to the massive explosion.

I found Lily and Rose hiding silently inside a large, hollowed-out oak tree.

I hugged them tightly, trying desperately to hide the blood soaking through my torn shirt.

We walked for three exhausting miles through the dark forest until we finally reached a desolate highway.

A pair of bright headlights approached slowly, and I prepared to fight for our lives all over again.

The car stopped abruptly, and the passenger window rolled down to reveal Sarah in the driver's seat.

She had survived the cruiser crash and ingeniously tracked my location using my cell phone's GPS signal.

She ordered us to get in quickly before the angry cartel or the corrupt cops found us walking in the open.

We drove across the state line into New Mexico right before the sun came up.

Sarah took us to a heavily fortified safe house run entirely by an underground network for abused women.

A rogue medical doctor stitched up my deep wound while my daughters finally slept in a safe, warm bed.

I honestly thought the absolute worst part of our long nightmare was finally over.

I turned on the television in the quiet living room to watch the early morning news broadcast.

The breaking news banner at the bottom of the screen announced that a massive federal manhunt was currently underway.

The FBI was not looking for David or the violent cartel boss.

They broadcasted my face clearly on the screen, labeling me as a highly dangerous domestic terrorist.
