Chapter 3 - The Unexpected Captor

I froze completely as the cold metal of the gun barrel pressed harder against my skull.

The voice did not belong to my cruel mother-in-law.

It belonged to Sarah, my husband’s supposed ex-girlfriend who had allegedly moved out of state years ago.

Sarah kicked the heavy wrench out of my hand and shoved me forward.

I stumbled over Marcus’s motionless body and crashed hard onto the oily concrete floor.

“Where are my daughters?” I screamed, ignoring the deadly weapon pointed at me.

Sarah laughed bitterly and stepped out into the dim light of the garage.

She looked utterly exhausted, and her clothes were covered in dirt and engine grease.

“Your daughters are safe for now,” she said with a cold, emotionless tone.

“I took them out of here before Marcus could hand them over to his cartel buddies.”

I stared at her in utter confusion from the ground.

I asked her why she was helping me after she had spent years hating me for marrying David.

Sarah’s expression hardened as she slowly pulled back the sleeve of her jacket.

Her arm was covered in brutal, faded scars that looked exactly like the ones on my own back.

“He did the exact same thing to me when I was pregnant with a girl,” she whispered painfully.

“I lost my baby too, and Agnes helped him bury the medical evidence.”

My mind raced as I realized Sarah was not my enemy at all.

She tossed me a set of keys and told me a black van was parked out behind the shop.

She said my girls were asleep in the back seat and that we needed to leave the state immediately.

I scrambled to my feet and thanked her repeatedly with tears streaming down my face.

We ran up the stairs and burst through the back door of the garage into the night air.

The black van was sitting there exactly as she had promised.

But before we could reach the doors, blinding police spotlights suddenly illuminated the entire alleyway.

A police megaphone blared, ordering us to drop our weapons and step away from the vehicle.

David stepped out of the lead police cruiser wearing a smug, victorious grin.
