Chapter 5 - The Deal With the Devil

The glaring headlights shone down through the broken windshield of the overturned cruiser.

I unbuckled my seatbelt and crashed painfully onto the interior roof of the car.

I crawled out through the shattered window, coughing on the thick smoke rising from the ruined engine.

A tall man stepped out of the vehicle at the top of the hill and walked slowly down the muddy slope.

I grabbed the dead officer’s dropped flashlight and shined it directly at the approaching stranger’s face.

It was Hector, the notorious cartel boss that Marcus had been secretly working for.

Hector stopped a few feet away from me and casually lit an expensive cigarette.

He told me that David owed him exactly three million dollars in stolen smuggling profits.

He explained that David was planning to sell my daughters to an overseas buyer tonight to pay off the massive debt.

My blood ran completely cold as the horrifying reality of David’s evil crashed over me.

Hector blew a thick cloud of smoke and offered me a chilling proposition in the dark.

He said his men had tracked David’s van to a private airstrip located twenty miles away.

He promised to help me rescue my daughters, but only if I helped him retrieve his stolen money.

I did not care about the law or the stolen money anymore.

I looked the cartel boss directly in the eye and agreed to his dangerous terms without hesitation.

Hector smiled faintly, handed me a loaded pistol, and told me to get into his armored SUV.

We sped down the desolate Texas backroads toward the hidden airstrip at terrifying speeds.

I checked the magazine of the weapon and prepared myself to do whatever it took to save my girls.

We crashed aggressively through the chain-link gates of the airfield just as a small private jet was starting its engines.

David’s black van was parked carelessly near the boarding stairs.

Hector’s heavily armed men surrounded the plane with assault rifles raised and ready to fire.

I jumped out of the SUV and ran toward the van, screaming my daughters' names at the top of my lungs.

May you like

I ripped open the sliding doors of the van, expecting to pull my girls into my desperate arms.

The back seat was completely empty except for a ticking explosive device counting down from ten seconds.
