Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Mother

I drove the SUV back down the mountain with my foot pressed completely to the floorboard.
Sarah reloaded her weapons in the passenger seat, fully preparing for a brutal war at the safe house.
We arrived at the secluded compound and found the front gates smashed open by a local police cruiser.
I did not wait for the vehicle to stop completely before I jumped out and sprinted toward the front door.
I kicked the wooden door open and aimed my weapon directly into the center of the living room.
The corrupt police chief was standing there holding my screaming daughters tightly by their collars.
He raised his service weapon and threatened to shoot them if I took another step forward.
I did not flinch, and I did not lower my gun for a single second.
I looked him dead in the eyes and told him that his entire cartel payroll had just been seized by the FBI.
I informed him that David and Agnes were already in federal custody facing inevitable life sentences.
The chief’s confident demeanor instantly shattered as he realized he was fighting a completely lost cause.
He lowered his weapon, dropped to his knees, and surrendered peacefully to Sarah as she entered the room.
I dropped my gun and fell to the floor, pulling Lily and Rose into a desperate, crushing hug.
The uncorrupted federal agents arrived twenty minutes later to take the chief away in heavy handcuffs.
The lead FBI director personally assured me that all false charges against me were permanently dropped.
David and Agnes were both denied bail and charged with human trafficking, attempted murder, and massive financial fraud.
They would never see the outside of a maximum-security prison for the rest of their miserable lives.
Six months later, the horrors of that Texas rental house felt like a distant, fading nightmare.
I used the massive financial settlement from the corrupt police department to buy a beautiful home on a sunny beach in Florida.
My daughters were thriving, laughing in the ocean waves, completely safe and endlessly loved by their mother.
I stood on the porch with a cup of coffee, finally at peace with the beautiful life we had built.
The mail carrier arrived and handed me a thick, unmarked envelope with absolutely no return address.
I opened it to find a recent photograph of my new house taken from the beach just hours ago.

Clipped to the photo was a handwritten note from my biological father, a ruthless man I thought had died twenty years ago.
The chilling note simply read: "They failed to break you, so now I have to finish the job."
