Chapter 4 - The Safe House

Alexander stared at the photograph of his deceased partner for a very long time.
If Julian was actually alive, it meant Victoria had been planning this betrayal for over five years.
He realized he could not trust a single person in his corporate empire.
"We need to go somewhere completely secret," Alexander muttered to himself.
He led Maya out of the subway station and hailed an anonymous yellow taxi in the pouring rain.
He handed the driver a thick stack of cash and ordered him to drive to the industrial district.
They exited the cab near a line of abandoned shipping warehouses that looked entirely empty.
Alexander walked up to a rusted metal door and placed his thumb on a hidden biometric scanner.
The heavy steel door clicked open, revealing a pristine, high-tech safe house illuminated by LED lights.
The massive room contained an armored tactical vehicle, racks of weapons, and a private supercomputer.
He walked straight to the computer terminal and began typing at lightning speed.
He was running a trace on the IP address Victoria had used for the video call.
The progress bar inched across the screen as the complex algorithms hunted for her digital footprint.
"I found her," Alexander announced triumphantly as a red dot appeared on the digital map.
She was currently hiding at the top of his own corporate headquarters.
Suddenly, the computer screen flashed violently and turned entirely blood red.
A digital countdown timer appeared in the center of the monitor, starting at exactly thirty seconds.

Below the timer, a bold white text message blinked ominously.
"Look under the floorboards," the message read.
