Chapter 3 - The Ghost from the Past

Alexander stared at the digital image of his treacherous wife.
He realized his emergency failsafe had been completely hijacked to authorize the final transfer.
"You will never get away with this, Victoria," he growled into the phone.
She simply laughed and ended the video call without another word.
Alexander threw the compromised device onto the concrete and crushed it under his heavy leather shoe.
They needed to get off the grid before Victoria's mercenaries tracked his location.
He took Maya by the hand and led her through the labyrinth of back alleys toward a nearby subway station.
He guided her to a row of rusty storage lockers hidden near the maintenance tunnels.
He punched a twelve-digit code into a rusted keypad and pulled the metal door open.
Inside was a duffel bag containing stacks of untraceable cash, two dark jackets, and a loaded handgun.
He handed Maya a warm jacket and quickly put on a black tactical coat for himself.
He tucked the heavy weapon into his waistband and looked down at the child.
"How did you know that driver was an imposter?" Alexander demanded gently.
Maya zipped up her jacket and looked up at him with wide, innocent eyes.
"My daddy told me to wait at your gate and warn you," she answered softly.
Alexander frowned in deep confusion.
"Who exactly is your father, Maya?" he asked.
She reached into her small gray school sweater and pulled out a crumpled, faded photograph.
She handed the piece of paper to the billionaire without saying a word.
Alexander looked at the picture and felt his heart completely stop beating.

The man smiling in the photograph was his former business partner, Julian.
Julian was a man Alexander had personally buried after a fiery car crash five years ago.
