Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Alexander lunged forward and tackled Victoria violently to the hard steel floor.
He pinned her arms behind her back and quickly secured her wrists with heavy plastic zip ties.
He left her struggling on the ground and sprinted toward the main laboratory computer terminal.
He hacked furiously into the deployment logs to track the location of the real Genesis weapon.
The green text scrolled rapidly across the screen, verifying the absolute truth.
The master payload had never been armed, and the real weapon was still securely locked in the subterranean vault.
The city was completely safe from the biological threat.
He had successfully stopped his wife's insane, apocalyptic plot.
He pressed the emergency distress beacon on his belt to signal the federal authorities.
Distant police sirens began to wail down the mountain road, confirming that backup was finally arriving.
He turned around and breathed a massive sigh of heavy, exhausted relief.
He walked over to where Maya was standing and knelt down to look her in the eyes.
He smiled and reached out a hand to thank the little girl for helping him survive the nightmare.
Maya smiled back at him with a sweet, perfectly angelic face.
Suddenly, a sharp, incredibly painful pinch struck the side of Alexander's neck.
He gasped loudly and stumbles backward, pulling a small, empty syringe from his burning skin.
He looked at Maya in absolute terror as his vision instantly began to blur and darken.
Maya wiped a fake tear from her eye and dropped her little gray school sweater carelessly to the floor.

"Victoria was just the loud distraction we needed," the little girl whispered in a chillingly cold, adult voice.
"Your DNA is the final key to the real vault, Father, and my true employers send their warmest regards."
