Chapter 9 - The Adrenaline

Dmitri pushed his back against the titanium door, desperately trying to force it closed.
Bullets began to ping against the thick metal frame.
Maria rushed over and pushed against the door with all her strength.
It slowly moved an inch, but it was not enough to lock.
Sophie sat on the floor next to Alexei's motionless body.
She opened the battered dollar-store medical kit she had carried through the vent.
Inside her kit was a real auto-injector of epinephrine she had found on the doctor's tray earlier.
She thought it was a magical healing pen.
She remembered her mother saying the man needed to wake up.
Sophie grabbed the EpiPen, pressed it hard against Alexei's thigh, and clicked the button.
The powerful adrenaline shot directly into his bloodstream.
Outside the door, the mercenaries attached a breaching charge to the metal frame.
"Take cover!" one of the attackers yelled in the hallway.
Dmitri tackled Maria to the ground just as a massive explosion rocked the doorway.
Smoke and fire filled the entrance of the safe room.
Two mercenaries stepped through the smoke, raising their assault rifles.

Alexei Petrov opened his eyes.
