Chapter 6 - The Distraction

The plastic stethoscope hit the floor with a hollow clatter.
Doctor Evans flinched, his eyes darting upward toward the ceiling vent.
Sophie was staring down at him with an angry scowl on her face.
"Leave my mommy alone!" the four-year-old shouted.
That one second of distraction was all Maria needed.
She kicked a rolling medical stool directly into the doctor's knees.
The man lost his balance and fired a silenced shot into the ceiling.
Before he could recover, the doors to the medical bay burst wide open.
Dmitri rushed into the room with his weapon drawn.
He saw the gun in the doctor's hand and fired twice without hesitation.
Doctor Evans collapsed onto the floor, clutching his chest.
Maria let out a massive sigh of relief.
She reached up to help Sophie down from the ventilation shaft.
Dmitri holstered his weapon and walked over to the dying doctor.
"Who else is working for Romano?" Dmitri demanded.
The doctor coughed up blood and gave a sickening laugh.
"It does not matter anymore."
The doctor weakly pointed a bloody finger toward the heart monitor beside the bed.

Alexei's heart rate was dropping incredibly fast.
"I already swapped his oxygen tank with pure nitrogen," the doctor smiled before taking his final breath.
