Chapter 3 - The Missing Guard

Dmitri grabbed the radio off his belt.
"Speak."
The guard on the other end sounded panicked.
"Leo just drove a reinforced SUV through the main gate."
"He smashed right through the barricades."
Dmitri cursed violently in Russian and threw the radio onto the leather couch.
He looked down at Alexei, whose breathing was becoming shallow and ragged.
"Where is Doctor Evans?" Dmitri yelled.
"He is coming up from the basement medical bay right now," a guard replied.
Dmitri turned his cold eyes back to Maria.
"Take your child and get into the vault behind the bookshelf."
Maria did not want to argue with a man who had just held a gun to her heart.
She picked up Sophie and rushed into the hidden steel-reinforced room.
Dmitri slammed the heavy vault door shut behind them.
The click of the lock echoed in the small, dark space.
Maria set Sophie down and tried to turn on the emergency lights.
A piece of white paper suddenly slid under the crack of the heavy steel door.
Maria picked it up with shaking hands.

The note was written in fresh, red ink.
"The boss is dead, and the little girl who saw the poison is next."
