Chapter 9 - The Edge of Justice

Damon screamed as he fell, but his frantic hands managed to catch a steel support beam.

He dangled forty stories above the street, his legs kicking wildly in the empty air.

I lay on the cold balcony floor, panting and clutching my stomach in sheer agony.

The FBI agents rushed past me, securing the area and untying my father inside.

"Clara, help me!" Damon begged, his arrogant voice replaced by pathetic, whimpering terror.

"Please, I am slipping, pull me up!"

I dragged my exhausted, pain-wracked body to the edge of the broken railing.

I looked down at the man who had locked me in a dog cage, poisoned me, and tortured my father.

His fingers were slowly sliding off the slick metal beam.

"Disloyal husbands belong in the dirt," I whispered coldly.

I did not reach out my hand to push him, but I absolutely did not reach out to save him.

The lead FBI agent grabbed my shoulder and pulled me safely away from the ledge.

Two agents grabbed Damon by the wrists and hauled him violently back onto the balcony.

They slammed him onto the concrete, cuffing his hands tightly behind his back.

"Damon Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, and corporate fraud," the agent announced.

Damon wept like a coward as they dragged him away to face the rest of his miserable life in federal prison.

My father ran out onto the balcony and fell to his knees beside me.

He held my hand tightly as another wave of unbearable pain washed over me.

"The ambulance is here, Clara, you are safe now," my father cried, kissing my cheek.

The paramedics rushed in with a stretcher, lifting me gently and securing me.

I closed my eyes, finally letting go of the fear that had consumed my life for the past year.

As they wheeled me into the elevator, I felt the unmistakable urge to push.

The real battle was finally over, but the most important moment of my life was just beginning.
