Chapter 10 - Freedom and Shadows

The hospital room was filled with the beautiful, piercing sound of a newborn baby crying.
I lay perfectly still, tears of absolute joy streaming down my exhausted face.
The nurse gently placed my perfectly healthy baby boy on my chest.
He was small, but he was strong, and he was finally entirely mine.
My father stood beside the hospital bed, his bruises healing, looking down at his new grandson with immense pride.
"He is beautiful, Clara," my father whispered, wiping a tear from his eye.
The nightmare was officially over, and we had won everything back.
Damon was denied bail by a federal judge and was facing consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
The authorities froze his assets, and my mother's billion-dollar trust fund was legally transferred into my name.
Lacey survived her injuries and testified against Damon in exchange for immunity.
I bought a beautiful new home with a massive garden, surrounded by the best security money could buy.
I spent my days watching my son grow in a home filled with nothing but love and peace.
We were safe, we were happy, and the dark shadow of Damon Vance was gone forever.
Six months later, we were celebrating my son's half-birthday in our sunny living room.
The doorbell rang, and my father walked to the front porch to retrieve the mail.
He returned holding a sleek, black wooden box with no return address.
I opened the box carefully, and my heart completely stopped in my chest.
Inside rested a solid silver pacifier stained with a single, dried drop of blood.

A heavy cardstock note attached to it was signed elegantly by Damon's mysterious father.
"You took my son from me, Clara, so I am going to take yours."
