Chapter 4 - The Enemy's Mistress

I stared at the woman who had tormented me, now bleeding on my cabin floor.

My first instinct was to let her suffer for everything she had done to my family.

But my father dragged her inside and quickly applied pressure to her bleeding wound.

"Why should we believe a single word you say?" my father demanded harshly.

Lacey coughed, her face pale as she looked up at me with desperate, terrified eyes.

"Because I found the trust fund documents," Lacey wheezed, trembling in pain.

She explained that Damon did not care about me or the baby at all.

My late mother had secretly patented a revolutionary medical technology before she died.

The patent was worth billions, but it was locked in a trust that only transferred to my firstborn child.

"Damon needs the baby born alive to activate the trust," Lacey explained.

"Once he has the child and the money, he plans to stage your tragic suicide."

I felt sick to my stomach, finally understanding the true depth of his evil plan.

"He found out I copied the files, so he stabbed me and threw me out of a moving car," Lacey cried.

She reached into her bloody coat and pulled out a small encrypted flash drive.

"Everything you need to send him to prison is on this drive," she promised.

Before my father could take it, the glass of the living room window shattered violently.

A tear gas canister rolled across the wooden floor, spewing thick white smoke.

Red laser sights cut through the darkness outside, aiming directly at the cabin walls.

A voice blared over a megaphone from the dark woods.

"Send Clara out, or we burn the cabin down with all of you inside."
