Chapter 2 - The Toxic Truth

The hospital room spun around me as the doctor's words sank into my mind.
Damon had not just wanted to humiliate me.
He had been actively trying to murder me and my unborn child.
My father clenched his fists, his face turning pale with murderous rage.
"He was poisoning her meals," my father growled, pacing the floor of the sterile room.
"I will make sure that monster never sees the light of day again."
I rested my hand on my belly, feeling a terrifying stillness where my baby usually kicked.
The doctor assured us the poison had not crossed the placenta yet, but we were incredibly lucky.
I spent three days recovering in the private ward under heavy security.
My father hired the best lawyers in the city to ensure Damon's bail was denied.
We thought we were finally safe from his terrifying reach.
On the morning of my discharge, the television in my room flashed a breaking news report.
The anchor announced that the charges against billionaire Damon Vance had been miraculously dropped.
I stared at the screen in absolute disbelief as footage showed Damon walking freely out of the precinct.
"How is this possible?" I cried out, panic tightening my chest.
My father's phone rang, and he answered it with trembling hands.
He listened for only a few seconds before his face completely drained of color.
"Damon just froze all of my corporate bank accounts," my father whispered.
The door to my hospital room suddenly burst open.
Two massive men in dark suits stepped inside, followed closely by a smiling Damon.
"Did you really think a dog cage could hold a king, Clara?" Damon asked.

He tossed a thick legal document onto my hospital bed.
"I have a court order declaring you mentally unfit, and I am taking custody of the baby today."
