Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Breached

I grabbed the legal document, my eyes scanning the forged signatures of corrupt psychiatrists.
Damon had used his massive wealth to buy the legal system entirely.
"You are not touching my child," my father shouted, stepping between Damon and my bed.
One of Damon's thugs pulled a taser from his jacket, ready to strike my father down.
I pressed the emergency button on my hospital bed, setting off a blaring alarm through the ward.
Nurses and hospital security rushed into the room, causing Damon's men to hesitate.
"This isn't over, Clara," Damon whispered, his eyes completely devoid of humanity.
He straightened his suit jacket and walked out before the security guards could detain him.
My father did not wait for the hospital to officially discharge me.
He bundled me into a wheelchair and rushed me down to the underground parking garage.
We drove for hours until we reached a secluded cabin deep in the northern mountains.
It was a secret property my father had purchased years ago under a fake corporation.
We locked the heavy wooden doors and closed the steel shutters over the windows.
For a brief moment, the quiet crackle of the fireplace made me feel a false sense of security.
We sat at the rustic table, plotting our next move to expose Damon's corruption.
Suddenly, a frantic pounding echoed against the thick front door.
My father grabbed a hunting rifle from the cabinet and slowly approached the entryway.
He peered through the security peephole and gasped in shock.
He unbolted the door, and a woman collapsed onto our welcome mat in a pool of blood.
It was Lacey.

"He tried to kill me," she choked out, clutching a deep knife wound on her side.
"Damon knows you are here, and his men are already surrounding the woods."
